Custom Shop Setup

For many new clubfitters / clubmakers finding the right equipment is difficult because they are still learning how. Without knowing how you can’t really know what. In this section I’m going to attempt to give you a shop setup for an ideal shop. Along the way I will offer alternative ideas for beginners so they can build a shop without having to make a major investment in one lump sum.

I will give you two sections, one on club building and one on clubfitting. Since most of us also do repair work I will begin with the club building first.

You will see many recommendations from many members here and some additions randomly added. You should read them all to see which apply to you and who to ask questions of on the email list.

  • Bench Vice
  • Rhino grip Rip & Box cutter knife
  • Grip tape scraper
  • Quick release clamp for use in Bench vice for holding shafts saves lots of time.
  • Air compressor not a must but will save lots of time on re-gripping
  • Rubber vice pads
  • Gram scale & Digital calipers
  • Assorted 3M Tape Blue and Green 2” wide is by far the best brand to use
  • Re-Shaft Work & Basic Repairs
  • Shaft Puller for graphite shafts
  • Belt sander 42” with assorted belts for sanding and polishing
  • Electric Heat gun for graphite along with Propane torch for steel
  • Eaze outs for removing broken steel shafts.
  • T shaft extractor for removing broken graphite shafts.
  • Hosel cleaning brush & sanding spirals
  • Chop saw or tubing cutter.
  • 3/8” Drill motor electric or cordless battery I have both.
  • Reamers .370 & .355, and Assorted drill bits,
  • Frequency machine Digiflex, Golf works or Golf Mechanix it is the most versatile.
  • Shaft spine finder used for finding NBP and Flo of shafts along with a laser shaft tip light.
  • Some type of club measuring device Bench top works the best.
  • Swing weight scale is a must, MOI machine not a must for starters
  • Loft and Lie bending machine & Drill Press you will need at some point.

The above list will let you do most common club repairs.
